Before he met and married Laura 17 years ago he had been married to another woman and had another child. The wife died under suspicious circumstances. After his first wife's death he was unable to take care of a small child so she was sent to live with his wife's family. He sees his daughter occasionally but she resents the fact that he did not want her (her view of the custody thing).
