While bird control specialists all over the nation are busy this summer installing devices to deter pest birds including pigeons, members of the American Pigeon Racing Commission are engaged in staging pigeon races in most every state. Who would have thought? And believe it or not, there are dozens of pigeon organizations in America, even an annual convention and shows attracting thousands of pigeon fanciers from around the world. These folks swear that their pigeons are for sport and are nothing like the ones who litter buildings, sidewalks and statues with their droppings. Had I known that in 2007, when I wrote my first article on bird control for this magazine, I might have done more research on birds and would have found, as I did in writing this lead-in, that bird lovers have national associations, tours, festivals and conventions for all kinds of feathered fliers, many of which are considered pests by others....
Several years ago, American Window Cleaner Magazine profiled several of the industry’s young and growing trade associations to give each group the opportunity to share what they envisioned for their future and how they intended to carve out a niche for themselves within the window cleaning community. All of our industry’s professional networks – both big and small – have become increasingly important resources for window cleaners, particularly as the economy takes its toll on many in the industry. This year, we decided to revisit some of these organizations (including one newcomer, the United Association of Mobile Cleaning Contractors) and find out how they have fared over the past year and what they are doing to grow their membership and provide support for their members in these difficult times....
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 is part of a massive $787 billion legislative vehicle comprised of tax breaks, spending on infrastructure, health care and alternative energy, in addition to aid to the states and local governments.
